  • You can always bump into many unknown words while reading a book. Sometimes these words may have deeply impact on whole meaning of passage. I feel that there are two solution; looking them up in dictionary and carrying on reading. Initial way would be better to learn the words quickly, but it leads to interrupt the reading. Another one may be a good way of understanding theme of a book.

Which way of reading a book is better? What do you think?

  • In my opinion, the second one is better. As you said, if you look the words up, there is the possibility of forgetting the theme of the passage. In someway, you can get the meaning of the sentence at whole. But if the unknown words are more than three of four, you need to look them up. There is now way.

*Nice thread, I hope all people in this section give away their opinions.
  • In first way, interrupting the reading might be problematic since you do not know how many unknown words you will bump into.
In second way, you can get the meaning by the sentence but not all the time it is right and you may forget the word when you finish reading.

As a suggestion, while reading, try to get the meaning by the sentence and underline the words that you do not know and keep reading, this shouldn't interrupt you so much. When you stop reading (not when you finish the book), go back and look up those words in dictionary. I always use this method and it is way better than interrupting the reading for just a word or forgetting the word when you finish reading.
  • Take a electronic translator, it'll take 10 seconds to figure out what the word means then you can continue reading. They are like 30 lira, you can find them at stores etc.

I've started to read the Harry Potter series being in English. I'll try out your suggestion while reading them.

I don't need it because I can access Longman Online Dictionary Website via mobile phone. Also, I don't suggest it. For this reason, we don't know what such dictionaries depend on. They aren't credible. Please use the most known dictionaries.
  • At the end of the page, you have to check meanings of the words. If you understand wrong them when you are reading, you can make it right after page. And you don't have to "forget theme"
